4. Course Description:

This course provides an overview of mental health issues likely to be encountered in human service settings. The impact of mental health disorders on the individual, the family, and the community will be explored. The focus of the course is not on diagnoses, but instead will prepare students to be sensitive to the needs of people with mental health challenges and learn the skills necessary to work effectively in a variety of human service settings. Students will learn the importance of trauma informed care and will demonstrate an understanding of the impact of trauma on an individual. Students will be certified in Mental Health First Aid as part of this course.
