4. Course Description:

Students expand on Introduction to Welding: Equipment setup, safety, electrode selection, and operating parameters. Students will produce high quality welds in the flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions. The main objective is to build the students’ skill set to reach a level of quality for entry level positions.

1. Lecture Sessions

I. Safety and setup of shielded arc welding equipment

Selection the appropriate personal protection equipment.
Selecting the proper process for the weldment.
Electrode selection.
Setting polarity
Development of arc length control.

II. Weldment joint selection and preparation and processing.

Compare and contrast flat, horizontal, and vertical weld manipulation techniques
Identify different types of joint alignment and preparation.
Controlling weld bead contour during the welding process.
Understanding undercut, overlap, porosity, and slag inclusions as they pertain to weld strength.
Understanding the effect of electrode angle.

III. Advanced shielded metal arc welding techniques.

Techniques for multiple pass welds.
Identify proper usage of open and closed root welds.
Weld cleaning and the use of a hot pass.
