This course is an introduction to the diesel industry and the environment in which they will be working. Personal and shop safety will be emphasized. Other topics will include industry standards and regulations, tool and hardware use and identification, and fundamental repair skills.

Identify hazards in the work area. From repair manuals students will be able to locate the possible hazards found on different types of equipment. |
Analyze and follow a sequence of operations |
Use several different sequences of operation events for this class. While drilling and tapping students will be required to utilize the proper size of drills to obtain the proper tapped hole. Checking track tension and hydraulic oil levels will require use of operations manuals to follow correct sequence to provide accurate results. |
Utilize appropriate technology |
Use electronic service data to properly service equipment |
2. Course Specific Outcomes - Students will be able to achieve the following measurable goals upon completion of
the course:
- Demonstrate ability to keep work area safe;
- Demonstrate the ability to use basic tools, specialty tools, measuring tools, and various shop equipment;
- Demonstrate the ability to recognize types of fasteners and their applications;
- Perform drilling, tapping, and thread repair; and
- Perform welding and cutting operations utilizing different types of equipment.

1. Lecture Sessions
- Fundamentals of safe practices in the workplace
- Legal responsibilities of employees and employers relating to safe working practices
- Proper safety and emergency procedures for the workplace and identify workplace hazards
- Various types of PPE used in the workplace
- Legal responsibilities of employees and employers as it pertains to hazards materials
- Importance of selecting and properly installing the correct fastener
- Fastener classification according to mechanical strength
- Principles and methods of proper fastener tightening
- Methods used to repair damaged threads
- Types of hand and measuring tools
- Use of DVOM
- Proper set-up and use of welding, cutting, and torch equipment
2. Laboratory/Studio Sessions
- Students will complete tasks in shop area while working safely.
- Students will properly identify proper hardware.
- Students will demonstrate use of measuring tools
- Students will demonstrate thread repair procedures and bolt extraction
- Students will perform welding and cutting operations
- Students will demonstrate ability to maneuver construction equipement
