2. Course Specific Outcomes - Students will be able to achieve the following measurable goals upon completion of
the course:
- Describe the characteristics of a professional dental assistant;
- List the members of the dental healthcare team the minimal education requirements for each member of the dental healthcare team;
- Describe the goal of ergonomics in the dental office;
- Explain how to prepare the dental treatment area for a patient’s arrival;
- List the clinical equipment most commonly found in the dental treatment area and their basic functions;
- List the four vital signs routinely taken in the dental office;
- Identify and discuss the five major groups of microorganisms;
- Describe the modes of disease transmission;
- Explain the CDC guidelines for disinfecting clinical contact surfaces;
- Discuss ethics, including sources for ethics, the basic principles of ethics, and why continuing education is an important obligation for dental assistants;
- Describe the use of a matrix system in class II, III, and IV restorations;
- List the seven steps involved in processing dental instruments;
- Discuss the steps of coronal polishing, including safety precautions, correct sequence, flossing after polishing, and evaluation of polishing;
- Identify four professional sources for dental information;
- Discuss the proper use and handling of hazardous chemicals;
- Discuss the role of the dental assistant in the clinical examination of the oral cavity;
- List the examination instruments, hand cutting instrument, restorative instruments and their uses;
- Discuss dental handpieces, including low-speed handpiece and attachments, and high-speed handpiece use in dentistry;
- Demonstrate knowledge in the performance of laboratory procedures;
- Explain the importance of a patient’s dental record, including patient compliance, its legal significance, and how the dentist uses the record to manage patient treatment;
- Discuss the differences in assisting with the different classes of permanent restorations;
- Demonstrate knowledge in direct patient care procedures; and
- Explain the role of biofilm in dental unit water line contamination.
