This course is the clinical lab component that focuses on the use of nursing judgment, evidenced-based practice, and informatics in the application of the nursing process, including assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation with individuals across the lifespan experiencing acute and chronic illness in order to provide safe, quality, patient-centered care and promote human flourishing. Clinical sites may include acute and long term care settings, clinics, and/or various community service agencies. Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading.

1. Application of Nursing Process: Each student must be evaluated for the ability to make a nursing care plan for a patient including:
a. Assessment
b. Planning
c. Intervention

2. Health teaching and counseling. Each student must be evaluated for the ability to:
a. Promote a patient’s understanding of a health practice or of needed area through teaching.
3. Teaching nursing personnel. Each student must be evaluated for the ability to:
a. Assess nursing personnel for a learning need
b. Make a teaching plan for meeting a learning need
c. Implement a teaching plan for nursing personnel
d. Determine if a learning need of nursing personnel has been met |
4. Therapeutic communication skills
a. Apply principles of effective communication through interactions with clients, nurses and families.
b. Demonstrate complete and concise end of shift oral report
c. Document in patients chart completely and concisely according to facility policy and procedure, including use of the electronic medical record as needed |
