Goal 1: Students will gain an understanding of the climate of the Mid-America region and how the climate impacts the choice and management of grape cultivars adapted to the region. Goal 1 Objectives: 1. List degree day units, length of growing season, average annual rainfall, and hardiness zone for region of residence and explain how these numbers/classifications are derived. 2. Explain how these environmental parameters affect the choice of cultivar and cultural management. 3. List the wine grape cultivars that are adapted to the students respective location.
Goal 2: Students will gain an understanding of the factors to consider when making decisions concerning cultural management and how management components impact canopy balance, vine growth and development. Goal 2 Objectives: 1. List the nutrients required by grapes for proper growth. 2
2. Explain how nutrient status is assessed in the vineyard. 3. Calculate how many pounds of fertilizer with specific analysis is needed to supply a particular amount of nutrient to one acre of grapes. 4. List the components of a drip irrigation system. 5. Describe the steps in irrigation scheduling and relate the seasonal growth phase of the vine to water requirement. 6. Describe a canopy both in and out of balance. 7. Explain how initial vineyard establishment decisions as well as current cultural practices impact canopy balance. 8. Identify the problems associated with overcropping and undercropping.
Goal 3: Students will develop an approach to integrated pest management. Goal 3 Objectives: 1. Describe the process to identify an unknown pest or cultural problem. 2. Demonstrate the use of a week identification guide or dichotomous key in identification of weeds. 3. Explain the importance of vineyard floor management. 4. List the common diseases and vertebrate and invertebrate pests in Mid-America. 5. Complete a sprayer calibration exercise.
Goal 4. Students will gain an understanding of harvest logistics and its relationship to wine quality. Goal 4 Objectives: 1. List the factors that are considered in order to determine when to harvest grapes. 2. Compare hand harvest to mechanical harvest. List the advantages and disadvantages of both. 3. Describe the effects of fruit quality on wine quality.
Goal 5. Students will gain an understanding of the process of and the reasons for balanced pruning of grapevines. Goal 5 Objectives: 1. Explain the process of balanced pruning. 2. Calculate the number of bud to leave based on a particular pruning weight and pruning formula. 3. Describe the anatomy of the compound bud. 4. Explain the implications of bud anatomy on cold injury management.
Goal 6. Students will gain an understanding of the factors involved in grapevine cold hardiness. Goal 6 Objectives: 1. List the cultural management practices already covered in this course and explain how these practices impact grapevine cold hardiness. 2. Explain how cold injury hazard and occurrence impacts pruning strategy.
Goal 7. Students will gain an understanding how cultivar, soil, climate and cultural management are all factors in the maintenance of a balanced vineyard.
Goal 7 Objectives: 1. Explain how the term balance is used in Mid-America vineyard management in relation to canopy management, crop management, crop quality, and economic sustainability. 2. Describe the importance of record keeping in maintaining a balanced vineyard.
