Students in this course develop and/or implement service learning project to help the college’s community including the surrounding local community under the supervision of college faculty and in cooperation with the staff of community organizations and agencies. Projects may include collaboration with college classes, various community agencies and organizations, education projects for college students, mentoring and shadowing. Students gain hands-on experience in project planning, development, implementation and evaluation.

I. Introduction to Service Learning
Students will be introduced to the elements of service learning and examine community needs.

II. Values
Students will explore their personal and cultural values. They will also explore their social/cultural identities.

III. Project Development
Students will explore their interest in several possible service learning opportunities. They will establish project goals, description, directions and timelines.

IV. Project Implementation
Students will participate in a service learning experience throughout the semester. They will keep a journal of their experiences and reactions throughout.

V. Researching & Report Writing
Students will research social/cultural issues that arose during their service learning experience and write a reflection/reaction paper presenting this information.

VI. Evaluation
Students will create a culminating presentation of the activities completed over the course of the semester. This will include research on a relevant social issue, reflections on their service learning experiences, and evaluation of service learning as a whole.
