4. Course Description:
This course is designed for students to improve their basic reading and writing skills. Coursework includes developing a set of strategies for reading and responding to different types of college-level reading materials with an emphasis on general comprehension of print material, vocabulary development, and effective reading and study techniques. The course will consist of a combination of individual and group work, with an emphasis on student participation and interaction. This course develops integrated and contextualized reading and writing skills and strategies. Topics include reading and writing processes, and critical thinking strategies.

- Read actively, using reading strategies in order to comprehend and summarize a variety of texts;
- Read critically, in order to analyze, evaluate and synthesize texts;
- Draw on a repertoire of strategies when encountering new vocabulary;
- Read and comprehend college-level materials independently;
- Demonstrate comprehension of college-level materials for a variety of purposes;
- Search out resources—such as reference works, audio-visual, technology, other people—to augment comprehension.
- Interpret text using critical thinking and problem-solving strategies;
- Read as a means for lifelong learning and enjoyment;
- Explain how the social-cultural-historical context of both the reader and the text influence their meaning-making process;
- Demonstrate comprehension of materials at a strategic level by reflecting on and reacting to texts;
- Read as a way to understand self and others;
- Write expository paragraphs and at least one essay which integrates and synthesizes course readings and are clearly focused, fully developed, and logically organized;
