4. Course Description:
The focus of this class is reviewing the coding rules for the ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding systems and then applying the rules. This will be authentic coding, using and creating coding scenarios. Comparison will be shown contrasting the ICD-9-CM & ICD-10-CM code assignments and conventions. Case studies will be used with more complex code assignments.

Choose codes by using Encoder software, following the procedures of extracting the key terms from the medical documentation to correctly code the medical record. |

- List the uses of ICD 9 & 10 diagnosis codes;
- Use the hypertension table;
- Identify the characteristics of the alphabetic index & tabular list;
- Explain the basic language associated with reimbursement methodologies;
- Understand the steps to accurate coding;
- Code to the highest level of specificity;
- Code complications of surgical and medical care;
- Apply V codes to the appropriate coding scenarios;
- Apply E codes to the appropriate coding scenarios;
- Understand adverse effects & poisonings;
- Understand when to code late effects;
- Code for acute and/or chronic conditions;
- Code for numerous body systems;
- Explain the difference between inpatient and outpatient coding;
- Define principal diagnosis;
- Find the coding guidelines;
- Define the importance of “includes” & “excludes” notes;
- Use the coding resource symbols; i.e., [], (), etc. to assist in coding application decision making; and
