4. Course Description:

This course describes signs of pregnancy, prenatal care, labor and delivery, and postpartum care. Complications of pregnancy, labor and delivery and postpartum, as well as fundamental nursing care of the neonate will be presented. The pediatric portion of the course describes the child's experience of hospitalization and health care adaptations for child and family. Care of the child with pediatric disease conditions will be presented.

• Distinguish between different pregnancy complications including infections and other high risk factors;
• Differentiate between the four stages of labor, including nursing care in each stage;
• Differentiate between true and false labor;
• Examine the complications of labor and methods of monitoring mother and fetus, examples fetal monitoring and c-section delivery;
• Integrate pain management methods for the laboring patient;
• Examine postpartum care and complications;
• Contrast breast and bottle feeding;
• Compare between the newborns, including the preterm, postterm, and term newborn;
• Demonstrate the care of a newborn with a complication;
• Relate the role of the nurse in women’s health-care;
• Discover the pediatric child’s hospital experience in each stage of development;
• Apply nursing care of the pediatric child with a condition of the following systems: neurological, musculoskeletal, respiratory, blood and lymph, circulatory, gastrointestinal, urinary, integumentary, endocrine, and reproductive;
• Demonstrate ability to calculate pediatric medication dosages;
• Examine the nurse's role in reporting child abuse; and
• Relate developmental characteristics and teaching/learning strategies that are appropriate to the pediatric patient.
