4. Course Description:
This course is a combination of the S-130, S-190 Basic Firefighter training taught by the DNR and U.S. Forest Service personnel. It is a federal course that all wildland fire fighters must take to be hired on fire crews. It includes basic fire weather, fire equipment, and basic fire suppression tactics. Students completing the class will receive a federal certificate to allow them to be hired on various fire crews.

2. Course Specific Outcomes - Students will be able to achieve the following measurable goals upon completion of
the course:
- Assess fire weather conditions.
- Perform basic firefighting skills – making a fire line, and using basic fire equipment.
- Describe the 10 basic firefighting orders.
- Recognize the 18 situations that shout “Watch Out”.
- Use a compass to navigate in the wilderness and over rough terrain.
- Describe different hose lays and nozzle types.

Listed below are major areas of content typically covered in this course.
1. Lecture Sessions
- Discuss fire weather and fire behavior related to various conditions and topography
- Discuss, consider and evaluate the various fire fighting skills
- Discuss and demonstrate the use of the various fire tools
- Discuss, consider and evaluate the 10 basic fire fighting orders
- Discuss and consider the 18 different situations that shout “Watch Out”
- Discuss and look at fire clothing and fire shelters
- Describe, discuss and evaluate the different types of hose lays, nozzles, and various fittings
- Discuss the various kinds of pumps
- Discuss and review navigation – compass and map
- Discussion of safety within all the operations
2. Laboratory/Studio Sessions
- The students will use and practice with the basic hand tools for fighting fire.
- The students will learn about and use the different kinds of pumps used in fighting fire.
- The students will learn about different kinds of hose lays using the various fittings to put them together.
- The students will look at and practice with the different kinds of nozzles and learn about how they are used in various situations.
- If fire and weather conditions permit a practice fire will be set to help the students get practice in controlling and putting out the fire.
- A PT examination will be given for those looking at red card certification for the DNR and other federal agencies
